We’ve seen countless fairy tales reimagined over the years, but Ever After looks ready to drag childhood folklore kicking and screaming into the darkest corners of the woods.
Written and directed by Laszlo Illes, the upcoming horror film takes familiar storybook characters and twists them into relentless killers in what promises to be a gore-soaked survival nightmare.
The film follows a group of friends celebrating a bachelorette weekend at a remote forest lodge. Their trip takes a deadly turn when they discover the surrounding woods are inhabited by a fanatical cult convinced they are the heroes—and villains—of classic fairy tales. As Little Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf, the Evil Witch, Prince Charming, and other twisted storybook figures emerge from the shadows, the friends find themselves trapped in a brutal game where every fairy tale ends with bloodshed.
Helping bring the nightmare to life is an impressive lineup of genre veterans and cult favorites. The cast includes Mark Sheppard (Supernatural), Bonnie Aarons (The Nun), Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th), and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), making Ever After one of the year’s most intriguing horror ensemble casts.
If the premise alone wasn’t enough to grab your attention, the combination of slasher mayhem, twisted folklore, and horror legends certainly should.
Ever After opens exclusively in theaters across the United States and Canada on September 4. Horror fans looking for a blood-soaked fairy tale with an old-school genre pedigree may want to keep this one firmly on their watchlist.
